Kellers Quick Fastest in Quarter Horse Final
Kellers Quick, with rider Cody Garrison, made a late burst from the outside to win the final of the $60,000 Grade III Stallion Service Auction Futurity Saturday, Sept. 13. The duo finished the 350-yard dash in a time of :18.475.
After a rough time at the starting gate resulting in the late scratch of the heavy favorite, First Down Beaus, the field finally made it out of the gate without a hitch. Fish This and Juan Delgado were first out. Kellers Quick rallied halfway through the race to win the richest Quarter Horse race in Indiana.
“I got him out of the gate, let him relax, went to work on him and it work out well in the end,” said Garrison. “This is the biggest win of my career.”
The victory was also the first career win for Kellers Quick. It also marked the first seasonal win for trainer Bart Sachleben.
“This is a family horse. He (Kellers Quick) is owned by my mom and dad,” Sachleben said. “It has been a pleasure to train such a special individual. He did everything I asked him to.”
Kellers Quick, a two-year-old gray gelding, returned $21.40, $8 and $4.40 in his first career win. He is owned by Chad and Melinda Fewell and J.W. Sachleben. The effort by Kellers Quick was his seventh career start. The Quick Coverage gelding now has nearly $40,000 in career earnings.
In other Quarter Horse stakes action, the three-year-old gray filly, Scraw Barie Shake, and rider Carter Riley won the $25,000 Stallion Service Auction Derby Final. Scraw Barie Shake had the early lead and held on to finish the 400-yard dash in :20.824.
“She had a good trial race,” said Riley. “I knew that if she didn’t stumble out of the gate she could win it.”
The Indiana-bred Scraw Barie Shake is owned by Perry Davis and Brett Mennen. Cindy Sanders trains the daughter of Royal Shake Em. She is now four for six in two years of racing at Hoosier Park. Scraw Barie Shake increased her career earnings to more than $65,000 with the Derby win.
